Universal Life Insurance in Austin

Universal life is permanent coverage you can adjust. You pick how much to pay within limits, and the policy builds cash value along the way. We lay out the different types side by side, show what each one costs and what it risks, and let you choose.

What universal life is and when it fits

Universal life is lifelong coverage. It stays in force for as long as there is enough money inside the policy to pay its costs. Part of each premium buys the insurance. The rest goes into a cash value account that earns interest or index credits. Your payment can rise when money is plentiful and drop when it is tight. The one rule is that the account must hold enough to cover each month's charges.

It is a good fit when you need coverage that will not expire at 65, but you want more flexibility than whole life gives you. Business owners use it to fund a buy-sell agreement or cover a key person. Parents use it to leave money to a beneficiary no matter when they die.

If you only need coverage while the kids are young or the loan is open, term life is usually cheaper. We will tell you that plainly.

The types we compare for you

  1. 01

    Guaranteed universal life

Built for the death benefit, not the cash value. Premiums are set so coverage lasts to a chosen age, often 90 to 121. Little cash value builds up. It is usually the lowest-cost way to get lifelong coverage.

  2. 02

    Current-assumption universal life

Cash value earns a declared interest rate that the insurer can lower, down to a floor in the contract. Projections assume today's rate. If rates drop, you may need to pay more to keep it in force.

  3. 03

    Indexed universal life

Credits are tied to a stock index, with a floor that keeps you from losing on a down year and a cap that limits the upside. Caps and participation rates can change. We show you illustrations at more than one rate, not just the rosy one.

  4. 04

Policy illustrations, read line by line

Every policy comes with a long illustration. We go through the guaranteed column and the non-guaranteed column with you, so you see what happens if things go worse than planned.

  5. 05

    Riders and add-ons

Options like a waiver of premium, an accelerated benefit for chronic illness, or a no-lapse guarantee rider. Each adds cost. We explain which ones earn their keep for your situation.

When universal life starts to make sense

  • Your term end date is getting close

Maybe your current term coverage expires in a few years, but the people counting on you still need protecting. Converting it, or switching to universal life, keeps coverage going without starting over with a new application at an older age.

  • Your income goes up and down

Commission earners and business owners like being able to pay extra in a strong quarter and less in a slow one.

  • You need coverage for a business deal

Buy-sell agreements and key person plans need coverage that lasts as long as the business does. Term may expire too soon.

  • You want to leave a set amount

If the goal is a known sum to a spouse, child or charity, guaranteed universal life does that for less than most whole life.

  • You have an old policy nobody has looked at

Older universal life policies sold in high-rate years can be underfunded now. A review shows whether yours is on track to lapse.

How we work through it with you

  1. 1

    A plain first conversation

We start on the phone or at your business. We ask what the coverage is for, how long you need it, and what you can comfortably pay each month.

  2. 2

    Side-by-side quotes

We pull quotes for the policy types that fit and lay them out together. You see the premium, the guaranteed coverage age and the trade-offs in one place.

  3. 3

    Application and underwriting

Most policies need a health questionnaire and often a short paramedical exam. The insurer may check prescription and driving records. We tell you what to expect and keep you posted.

  4. 4

    Delivery and a final read

Once the insurer says yes, we sit down and read the contract through together before you accept it. That includes the free-look period it states and how to name or change a beneficiary later.

What sets the cost of universal life

Because it is designed to last for life, universal life runs higher than term. The gap depends on the type you choose and a few details about you. You see the figures before making any decision.

Your age and health
Applying earlier, while healthy, usually lands a better rate class and a lower premium. Nicotine use changes the price more than nearly anything else.
Which type you pick
Guaranteed universal life is the cheapest route to lifelong coverage. Indexed and current-assumption versions cost more since you are also building cash value.
Length of the guarantee
Coverage guaranteed to 90 costs less than coverage to 121. Choosing the right age means you do not pay for years you may never use.
Payout size and riders
A larger death benefit raises the premium. Every rider carries its own charge, so we recommend only the ones that fit.

Universal life questions we hear

Is it possible for a universal life policy to lapse?

Yes. When the cash value is used up and the monthly charges go unpaid, the policy can end. Guaranteed universal life prevents this as long as you make the scheduled payment. For the other types, we recommend a check every year or two.

What separates universal life from whole life?

Whole life fixes one premium, and its contract lays out cash value growth year by year. Universal life lets your payment vary, and its cash value depends on declared rates or an index. You gain flexibility and lose some certainty. Our Whole Life Insurance page explains the other option.

Should I think of indexed universal life as an investment?

Not really. It is life insurance whose cash value earns credits tied to an index, inside a floor and a cap. Growth is possible, but fees and caps hold it back. We never present it as a replacement for the market.

Am I able to borrow against the policy?

Usually, once enough cash value has built up. Unpaid loans are subtracted from the death benefit, and a large balance plus interest can cause the policy to lapse. We work out the numbers first so you see how a loan affects your coverage.

Will I have to take a medical exam?

Frequently, though some insurers waive it for younger, healthier people buying smaller amounts. We tell you early which carriers could suit you and what each will require.
