Whole Life Insurance in Austin
A whole life policy stays in force for your entire life if the premiums get paid, and the payment is locked the day it starts. It also builds cash value you can borrow against. We show you how each policy is built, what you give up and whether term would serve you better.

What Whole Life Is and When It Fits
A whole life policy pays your beneficiary whenever you die, not just inside a 20 or 30 year window. Part of each premium goes into cash value. That cash value grows at a guaranteed rate written into the contract, and some policies may also earn dividends, which are not guaranteed.
It costs more than term life for the same face amount. Often a lot more. So it should not be everyone's first policy. The people it suits usually want protection with no end date, want to leave money for a spouse or a child with special needs, or have their term needs handled already and want a steady, conservative spot for some savings.
We sit down with you, by phone or at your business, and lay out what goes into a policy before we talk about price. If term life or a mix of the two works better for you, we say so.
What We Walk You Through
Premium schedule choices
You can pay for life, pay it off by 65, or pay it up in 10 or 20 years. Shorter schedules mean bigger payments now and none later. We put the numbers next to each other so you can see the difference.
Cash value and how it grows
We show you the guaranteed column and the projected column in the illustration and explain why they are different. You see what the policy is worth in year 5, year 15 and at retirement age.
Dividend options
If the policy is participating, dividends can lower your premium, buy more paid-up coverage, or be taken as cash. Each choice changes how the policy grows. None of them is promised in advance.
Riders worth a look
Waiver of premium, an accelerated benefit for terminal illness, and child term riders are common. Every rider raises the premium. We tell you which ones pay off for your situation and which ones only add cost.
Naming who gets the money
List a first-choice beneficiary and a backup, with full legal names. We check the wording with you so the benefit lands with the people you picked. If a minor child is involved, we mention when it may be worth asking an attorney about a trust.
Signs Whole Life Could Be the Right Call
Your term coverage is ending
When your term is a few years from ending and you still want protection, renewing at today's age can be costly. Whole life, or converting some of your term, can fix a level rate.
Someone will need your support for good
A child or adult with a disability may rely on support for decades after you pass. Coverage that never ends matches that need.
You plan to leave a particular gift
Some clients want a set amount to go to their children, a church or a charity. Whole life makes that figure reliable.
You co-own a business
If one owner dies, the other typically needs cash to buy that share from the family. A permanent policy on each owner can fund that under a buy-sell agreement.
Your other savings are maxed out
When your retirement accounts are already full and you want a low-risk spot for more, cash value can fill a small role. It does not take the place of those accounts.
How It Works From First Call to Policy
- 1
A short conversation
We ask about your age, health, income, who depends on you and what the coverage needs to do. It takes about half an hour and you do not need any paperwork yet.
- 2
Side-by-side illustrations
We show you two or three designs, such as pay-to-65 versus 20-pay, and explain each column in plain words.
- 3
Application and health check
The carrier may ask for a medical exam, a phone interview, or records from your doctor. Smaller policies sometimes skip the exam. We tell you which applies before you start.
- 4
Review the issued policy
When the policy comes back, we go through it with you line by line. A free-look window follows delivery. Send the policy back inside that window and your premium is returned.
What Sets Your Whole Life Premium
The carrier fixes your premium the day the policy is issued, and it never rises after that. Where that fixed amount lands depends on you and on how the policy is structured. Here are the parts that weigh the most.
- Your age and health
- Applying sooner, while you are healthy, locks a lower premium for life. Nicotine use, blood pressure and family medical history are all considered.
- Size of the payout
- A higher payout costs more. Many clients combine a modest whole life policy with a bigger term policy so payments stay manageable.
- How you schedule payments
- A 10-pay policy carries far higher yearly premiums than paying for life, but it is finished sooner. Over the years, the total you pay can come out lower.
- Riders and dividend choices
- Every rider raises the premium. Applying dividends toward your premiums can cut your out-of-pocket cost over time.
Common Whole Life Questions
Something not covered here? (512) 881-6874
Does whole life make sense as an investment?
We treat it as lifelong coverage with a savings piece attached, not as an investment account. The cash value grows slowly and steadily, with a guaranteed floor, and stocks have historically grown faster. It suits people who care most about certainty. If growth is your main goal, we will tell you that plainly.
Can I borrow from the cash value?
Yes, once it has built up. A policy loan does not need a credit check. Unpaid loans and interest are taken out of what your beneficiary receives, so we explain how that works before you use it.
What happens if I stop paying?
You usually have options. You can take a reduced paid-up policy with a smaller face amount, switch to extended term coverage, or surrender it for the cash value. Surrendering early often returns less than you paid in.
Should I buy whole life or term?
For most young families with a mortgage and kids, term life covers the big need for less money. Whole life makes sense for lifelong needs. Many clients end up with some of both, and we can quote them together.
Is whole life the same thing as universal life?
No. With whole life the payment stays put and the cash value guarantees are spelled out in the contract. Universal life gives you room to change payments and the coverage amount, but how long it lasts depends on its design and how well you keep it funded. Our universal life insurance page covers it in more depth.
